A Guide to Panic Attack Treatments

Panic attacks are categorized as episodes of severe anxiety lasting anywhere from two to ten minutes, sometimes more or less. One in every 75 people suffer from panic attacks, the majority of them women. While panic attacks are unpleasant and sometimes debilitating, there are ways to remedy them. There are a variety of panic attack treatments that people use to reduce the amount and severity of the attacks. The type of treatment you choose will depend on the cause and severity of your panic attacks, as well the preferences of you and your doctor. Here are some common panic attack treatments that you and your doctor may decide to implement:

Behavioral Therapy: With regular counseling, many people find that they're able to manage their panic attacks more effectively. Often, behavioral therapy includes identifying thoughts that may lead to panic attacks or thoughts that occur during panic attacks, and replacing them with healthy, proactive thoughts.

Antidepressants: The most common type of antidepressant prescribed for panic attacks is the SSRI, or selective serotonin reputake inhibitor. Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft are all well-known examples of SSRI antidepressants. While these medications can often help with panic disorder, antidepressants shouldn't be viewed as a magic fix and all side effects should be understood before deciding on this option.

Anti-Anxiety Medications: Valium, Ativan and Xanax are examples of anti-anxiety medications that can work to reduce one's level of panic. A word of caution -- these medications, when used incorrectly or for too long, can be habit forming.

Dietary Changes: Sometimes relief is as simple as changing your diet. Some foods, like sugar, processed flour, coffee, soft drinks and alcohol can make anxiety and panic attacks worse. Then there are foods like lean meat, whole grain and green vegetables that can encourage the production of serotonin and other mood-boosting chemicals in the brain.

Relaxation Techniques: Yet another option in panic attack treatments are the use of relaxation techniques. Meditation and deep breathing are examples of relaxation techniques that you can use to reduce your anxiety level. Sometimes, something as simple as regular exercise, the use of aromatherapy, or a soothing bath can be enough to relieve your level of anxiety.

If you're suffering from panic attacks, the first thing you need to do is schedule an appointment with your doctor. Prompt medical attention is key when it comes to finding effective panic attack treatments.
